At IMPACT Initiatives, we are at the forefront of advocating for and addressing loss and damage (L&D) associated with climate change. The recent participation of our representatives at the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2024 highlighted our commitment to advancing solutions that go beyond mitigation and adaptation efforts. This article delves into our contributions and insights gained from the conference, focusing on the urgent need for action on L&D.

Understanding Loss and Damage

Loss and damage refers to the impacts of climate change that exceed the capacity of communities and ecosystems to adapt. These impacts range from irreversible environmental damage to socio-economic disruptions and forced displacement. As a critical aspect of climate justice, addressing L&D is essential for supporting vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by climate change.

IMPACT Initiatives’ Engagement

At the Bonn Climate Conference, IMPACT Initiatives engaged in discussions centred on three major themes: climate, politics, and conflict; needs assessment and climate mobility; and enhancing visibility through innovative products. These themes underscored the multifaceted challenges of L&D and the diverse approaches needed to mitigate its impacts effectively.

Innovative Approaches and Expertise

Our expertise in remote sensing analysis allows us to assess the impacts of climate change on displaced populations comprehensively. We emphasized the importance of needs assessments to guide humanitarian responses and policy recommendations, particularly in facilitating climate-induced mobility and planned relocation.

Advocating for Change

IMPACT Initiatives advocated for integrated policy frameworks that consider the intersection of climate change with political and conflict dynamics. By enhancing visibility through interactive dashboards and policy briefs, we aim to amplify our impact on global climate advocacy and support for vulnerable communities.

Looking Forward

As we look ahead, IMPACT Initiatives remains committed to collaborating with international bodies and stakeholders to influence global climate policies on loss and damage. Our ongoing efforts with the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage and the Santiago Network reinforce our dedication to addressing climate impacts holistically.

Final Thoughts

The Bonn Climate Change Conference 2024 was a significant platform for IMPACT Initiatives to contribute to global efforts on loss and damage. We continue to champion initiatives that promote climate justice and resilience-building among the most vulnerable. By disseminating our learnings and recommendations, we strive to catalyse collective action towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

For further reading, the Loss and Damage Collaboration, a global network seeking to support those affected by loss and damage, published a paper based on discussions we had on how to quantify and measure loss and damage associated with displacement. This paper addresses economic and non-economic impacts, methodological challenges, key assessment dimensions, and ways to improve data collection and analysis, aiming to further explore how to better understand loss and damage. You can read the full paper here.
