Country Overview

Heavy rainfall between November 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 resulted in flash floods and landslides in the highlands and widespread flooding in the lowlands of Peru. A state of emergency was called across 18 of Peru’s 24 regions and estimates of affected populations rose as high as 900,000.

In support to the humanitarian response, the Shelter Cluster was activated in Peru in early June in partnership with the UN humanitarian team in Lima. Through its initiative REACH, and in the framework of its partnership with the Global Shelter Cluster, IMPACT rapidly deployed to Peru to conduct an assessment on the impact of the flooding on the shelters in the Loreto region. REACH conducted a rapid shelter assessment and mapping exercise including a sample of approximately 1,300 households. The assessment supported coordination efforts and informed the humanitarian community and national and regional stakeholders on the needs of the affected populations. The assessment was key in providing recommendations for further post-emergency response.
