Planning Refugee Settlements in the Kurdish Region of Iraq_1In April 2013, on behalf of UNHCR, REACH began facilitating the planning process for anticipated refugee settlements in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah governorates in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).   

REACH led the efforts to develop both Darashakran and Arbat camps, each to accommodate 10,000 individuals, from site identification and analysis in the early phases to site planning and finally site supervision and construction management. 

The planning of the camps was based on international standards, both UNHCR and Sphere, which outlined the general structure of the camps – a series of larger blocks composed of smaller communities, with each community composed of several households – and was integrated with principles of conventional community planning.
