Introduction

The Acute Needs Analysis (ANA) is a humanitarian research pilot project designed to identify populations facing urgent, life-threatening needs. It seeks to bring these populations to the attention of humanitarian decision-makers—especially in contexts where information is scarce or fragmented. All analysis is conducted by dedicated, country‑based analysts with deep contextual expertise, ensuring robust support for humanitarian prioritization across and within crises.

Global Analysis

Key insights

  • In 8 out 19 analysed crises, the 2025 ANA identified areas where breakdowns in essential services in vulnerable areas suggest large-scale loss of life is already occurring or imminent.
  • Gaza, Sudan, South Sudan, and CAR show widespread system strain and service collapse, likely causing preventable deaths across large regions.
  • In DRC, these areas are less geographically widespread but include large populations, meaning many people still face life‑threatening conditions.
  • Findings suggest that life-threatening conditions can emerge both in high-profile crises (e.g., Gaza, Sudan), as well as protracted, lower-visibility crises (e.g., Central African Republic, South Sudan), where cumulative shocks and service erosion continue to endanger life.
  • Significant evidence gaps limited full analysis in several contexts, leaving many vulnerable populations at risk of being unidentified and unsupported.
