On May 10th, 2024, non-state armed groups attacked Macomia, a strategic town, displacing over 1,000 families and forcing the suspension of government and NGO activities. In early July, tensions escalated when a civilian was shot by Defense and Security Forces after curfew, triggering violent protests. Since May, an estimated 6,962 families have been without humanitarian aid or district services.

The recent Rapid Needs Assessment conducted in partnership with Action Contre la Faim (ACF) in Macomia District following the attack, reveals alarming humanitarian needs. The assessment highlights the urgent priorities and challenges faced by displaced and host communities in Macomia Sede and surrounding areas.

Key Findings:

  • 75% of assessed households identified food security as their top priority need, with 71% citing a lack of financial resources as the main barrier to accessing food. The market supply of essential products is limited, and prices have risen substantially due to disrupted transportation.
  • quantitative and qualitative findings underscore Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene WASH as a critical need. Xangane and Xinavane lack functional water points, and sanitation facilities are inadequate, with 68% of households using non-hygienic facilities, raising the risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Access to healthcare is severely limited, with the only operational facility run by the Mozambique Defence and Security Forces. Insufficient medicines (45%), long distances to health facilities (33%), and security concerns (21%) were significant barriers. Moreover, 69% of households reported an adult member sick in the past two weeks.

The findings from Macomia underscore the critical need for comprehensive humanitarian support, particularly in food security, WASH, and healthcare. Immediate and coordinated action is essential to address these urgent needs.
