The humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is complex and protracted, affecting millions of people across the country. Decades of armed conflict and internal tensions, particularly in the eastern provinces, have driven large-scale population displacement. In 2025, the DRC hosted 5.3 million internally displaced people and 4.1 million returnees (OCHA 2025). These challenges are compounded by climate-related shocks, including recurrent flooding, as well as ongoing public health threats such as Ebola, cholera, and measles outbreaks. According to the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan, 14.9 million people will require humanitarian assistance, while 26.6 million people are facing acute food insecurity (IPC 2025).

Through its REACH initiative, IMPACT has been providing humanitarian information since its deployment in the country to support evidence-based decision-making, aid coordination, and response planning. Its work includes annual Multi-Sector Needs Assessments (MSNA), Humanitarian Situation Monitoring (HSM), public health analyses, and support to the Crisis Analysis and Response Quality Working Group (GTACQ).

IMPACT also contributes to market analysis and cash-based programming through the Joint Market Monitoring Initiative (JMMI), producing monthly market assessments in collaboration with the Cash Working Group (CWG) and data collection partners.

To strengthen the quality and effectiveness of humanitarian action, IMPACT supports OCHA’s AAP Technical Unit and provides technical assistance to provincial AAP Working Groups, humanitarian organizations, clusters, and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT). Through Third-Party Monitoring (TPM), IMPACT independently monitors humanitarian interventions implemented by partners, contributing to improved accountability, transparency, and the overall quality of emergency assistance programmes in the DRC.

In addition, IMPACT conducts environmental hazard analyses that combine remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and local knowledge to generate actionable insights for humanitarian decision-making. As co-lead of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), IMPACT supports information sharing, technical collaboration, and capacity strengthening among humanitarian partners.
