The recent assessment by IMPACT, through its initiative REACH in July 2024 highlights the impact of violence and displacement on the education system in Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique. Since the start of the year, attacks by non-state armed groups have disrupted the lives of thousands, with over 50,000 people displaced in April and May 2024 in the districts of Chiure and Macomia.

Key takeaways:

  • 151 schools remain closed, accounting for 15% of the total schools in the province, severely affecting the education of displaced children.
  • School closures vary significantly between districts, with some being more severely affected than others: Quissange, Macomia and Mocimboa Da Praia.
  • Schools in less affected districts are receiving a growing number of displaced students, stretching their already limited capacity.

This assessment underscores the need to strengthen the capacity of schools in districts hosting displaced students and to expedite the reopening of closed schools to minimize the impact on children’s education.
